What Are Retinal Tears?

Retinal tears occur when the vitreous, a gel-like substance in the eye, starts to shrink. This happens as we age, but eye trauma or surgery to the eye can prompt this process. The gel will stick to and tug on the retina, causing tears and, if left untreated, detachment. Additionally, the retina can tear if a diabetic patient experiences damaged blood vessels in the back of their eye. Retinal tears do not hurt and will not cause you any discomfort. However, if you notice floaters, flashes, hazy vision, or other changes in your vision, you should schedule an appointment at Sedalia Eye Associates. We can determine if you have a tear and can create an appropriate treatment plan. To schedule an exam, contact our Sedalia or Warsaw, MO office today.

What Can I Expect from Retinal Tear?

Detecting tears in the retina is key to preventing detachment. Laser treatments are available if a retinal tear is discovered, which can create a barrier around the tear, preventing fluid from entering it and pulling off any more of the retina. This can decrease your risk of detachment quite drastically.

At the start of this procedure, we will numb your eye with an anesthetic eye drop. From there, a state-of-the-art laser will be used to create the barrier around the tear, while the light from the laser will seal the area to stop fluid from going under the retina. You may experience some discomfort or blurred vision after your treatment, but this is only temporary.

If your retina has detached, we can refer you to another specialist for expert retinal detachment care.
